Jade begins her book by reminding us of the words by Marguerite Maury.
“To reach the individual, we need an individual remedy….we must, therefore, seek odoriferous substances that present affinities with the human being we intend to treat, those that will compensate for his deficiencies, and those that will make his faculties blossom”.
This astonishingly, generous book, is an immense knowledge share, focused exactly upon the very foundations of aromatic practice. The book is aimed at both current practitioners, and evolving students. Jade reflects her vast experience with chapters defining the foundations of mental health, anatomy and physiology; with specific chapters focusing upon the more challenging disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Every chapter demonstrates correlation to theory, practice models and reflective thinking. It is also beautifully illustrated.
From the perspective of presenting her work holistically Jade offers a depth of insight aiding any consultation related to mental health. For example, she offers consideration around sleep hygiene, morphological blending, and considering the aromatic palette. This is further complemented by suggested blends, and the advocation of specific essential oils. There is a novel chapter focussing upon the recognition of individual affirmations when working alongside specific essential oils – this is thoroughly enjoyable reflective thinking.
When exploring my own practices as a Respiratory Nurse and Essential Oil Practitioner, this book spoke volumes to me. There are practical notes around addressing the loss of smell, and considering its impact upon the individual’s wellbeing (which is something I see in patients still presenting with COVID, and Long COVID), alongside the more complex considerations of learning and empowering somatic practices (aiding others to release tension).
For me, the crux of this read is the chapter addressing breath work. A practice many practitioners view as both relevant and meaningful within aromatherapy and nursing consultations.
Jade’s book provides an excellent new resource - aiding meaningful aromatic practice within mental health practices. Written well, her book moves from chapter to chapter seamlessly, enabling growth of practice for current aromatherapists, and new learning the next generation of aromatic practitioners. Please consider her book as part of an exciting future for addressing mental health needs through aromatherapy.
