Goldenrod lights up the fields and roadsides of late summer, and we gather it from the wild just as the plumes open into full golden bloom. The fresh flowering tops are steeped in organic extra virgin olive oil until the oil takes on a warm, sunny gold. The genus name Solidago comes from the Latin solidare, “to make whole,” a nod to the plant’s long history in folk herbalism across Europe and North America.
Goldenrod oil has traditionally been used to ease stiff, achy muscles and joints. It is lovely in a warming massage after physical work, in a rub for tired hands and feet, or in balms and salves for the colder months. Use it on its own or blend it at 5 to 25% with other carrier oils.
Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tightly closed.
